3:10 to Yuma (2007)

You know there was a time when I wasn't that into westerns. In the past year or so that's totally changed. Of course I liked some Westerns, like The Good The Bad and The Ugly, but now it's one of my favorite genres. Westerns are something that not everybody really gets, and I now I finally get it. I won't try to explain it because it can't always be explained in words.
And so it was with great anticipation that I awaited the release of 3:10 to Yuma, the western remake directed by James Mangold, a big fan of the original apparently. I never saw the original, but maybe I should some time.
3:10 to Yuma is an awesome awesome movie. They don't make that many westerns anymore, and that's a shame. 3:10 to Yuma, like nearly all westerns, is a morality tale. In this land without computers and telephones and tv, men are seen for what they are. Men have facial hair. Men are badasses. Men are men, totally unlike today's metrosexuals. Damn do I love the western. Westerns are where the real men are. John Wayne and Clint Eastwood were real men, and it sickens me to see how much the ideal man has changed. Back then men carried a gun everywhere they went. Conversation in westerns are different than today. It's more poetic almost.
I saw 3:10 to Yuma in theaters, but it would've ruled just as much on DVD. It's not the greatest western ever, but it is a really damn good western. It's a great movie with great actors. Christian Bale, Russel Crowe, and Ben Foster are all extremely excellent in this.
3:10 to Yuma kicks ass, but at it's core are characters we can understand and a morality lesson. In this vast natural wasteland men are layed bare. There are no modern distractions. I guess there's a certain feeling of pureness in the western. Questions of existence are answered more simply by men in westerns. Talk is simple, but somehow more meaningful and deep. There's no over-complication of the question.
If you're into westerns then you'll love this movie, and if you're not into westerns then maybe this is the best western to start with.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
