Well Cobra, I was bored, so I decided to write a movie review. I haven't seen very many movies lately, so I'll just write about one of the most recent ones.
The Descent: 9/10
DISCLAIMER: Watch the UK(Unrated) version. The US(R) version's only difference is a sliced off ending that's supposed to give the impression of a slightly happier ending, but in the process destroys the movie's entire purpose and meaning. I prefer the darker ending.
I have my problems with this movie, but overall, this is the best horror movie to come out in years. Nothing of late comes close. The feel of this movie is awesome. The music and the use of only realistic lighting give it an incredibly claustrophobic feel. This movie does have monsters in it, ravenous flesh-eating ones at that, but most people are more scared by the claustrophobia induced scenes of the first act of the movie.
I like the interpretive and psychological aspects of this movie. Some have even theorized that the monsters are all in the protagonist's head.
The gore in this movie is heavy and amazingly well done. I like gore, but it doesn't make the movie scary. It's the film's teasing of the mind, forcing it to imagine what could be out there, that makes a movie scary. The original Alien, Hitchcock movies, Shyamalan movies, and Forbidden Planet are all excellent examples of this. Yes, The Descent may be gory, but it differs from most horror movies today in that it is actually somewhat scary. Most supposed horror movies today are not really horror, but just gore-fests. Not that I don't enjoy them for what they are though.
The Descent is a British film, and that may be why it's good. America is running out of ideas and Japan and the UK(28 Days Later) are coming up with the good stuff.
Oh, and Juno's freakin hot. The main character was an insane bitch, but I'll let you decide who to root for.
Here's my verdict. It's not as good as it's predecessors, like Alien and Aliens, or Pitch Black(although it's scarier than Pitch Black), but it easily outclasses all the other horror movies being made today. Watch it if you want something different than the norm that will maybe require you to use your brain a little.
